The 49ers made their 2nd pick of the 2023 draft as they trade up with San Diego acquiring 2.14 and 6.19 in exchange for 2.22 and 3.23.

According to the draft value chart this is a nice win for the Chargers but 49ers GM now back from the Netherlands said "we had one target that we felt would make a difference to the team, so felt it was worthwhile making this move. Yes we now don't pick again until the 5th round but Javier Ater (Appalachian State) was the last of the WR's that we were interested in taking in this draft."

As its quiet in the draft for the 49ers at the moment, here is the 3 year review of the 2020 draft.

The 3rd round pick was traded to Baltimore during the 2019 draft for pick 4.7 which was used to select kicker Kyle Brindza

1.31 FL Bennett Rivers 31/54 Post 35/45 Current 51/51
Rivers wasn’t active for any games in his rookie season as he suffered a serious MCL knee injury in week 4 of the preseason and was placed on IR. He recovered to play in 15 games in his 2nd season starting 9 as he caught 47 passes (66.2%) for 639 yards and 3 TD’s (4 drops). He also returned 5 kick-off s at a 19.8 avg and recovered a fumble. He started 1 of the 2 playoff games adding 6 catches (54.5%) for 68 yards and a TD (2 drops) while rushing once for 2 yards. In his 3rd season he started 11 of 16 games making 66 catches (60.6%) for 740 yards and 3 TD’s (5 drops) while rushing 3 times for 22 yards (long of 13). He returned 7 kickoffs for a 19.7 avg and 1 punt for 8 yards. He fumbled the ball once. In the playoffs he started the one game making 6 catches (100%) for 82 yards and returned a punt for 2 yards. Rivers has just signed a new 3 year deal and is expected to be one of the starters going into 2023.

2.31 WILB Stanley Hicks 18/43 Post 22/33 Current 20/27
He started 5 of 14 games in his rookie season making 14 solo tackles and adding 4 assists, while in pass coverage he allowed 6 catches (PDPct 74.5) but he did force a fumble. In 2021 he started 5 of 13 games making 16 solo tackles and 11 assists, allowing 10 catches but defending 2 (PDPct 76.5), he played in 2 post season games allowing 1 catch as he made 3 solo tackles and an assist. He however was cut prior to the 2023 season.

4.31 SLB Malachi Whorton 15/37 Post 20/35 Current 30/30
He started 3 of the 13 games active in his rookie season making 22 solo tackles, 8 assists and recording 2 sacks and a single hurry. He added an interception and a defended pass while allowing 13 catches to record a 75.8 PDPct. He did add a forced fumble to his tally. In 2021 he started 10 of 16 games making 73 solo tackles and adding 27 assists. He only had 0/5 sacks and added 2 hurries but did block a pass. When dropping back he defended 6 passes and picked off one which he returned 68 yards for a TD however he did allow a massive 48 catches (72.9 PDPct). He forced 2 fumbles and recovered 2, one which he also returned for a TD. In the playoffs he started one of the two games making 14 solo tackles and 2 assists. He defended one pass but allowed 10 catches (63.9 PDPct) while recovering a fumble. In 2022 he became the full time starter as he started all 16 games making 57 solo tackles and adding 26 assists. He also added 2 sacks and 4 hurries. He picked off another 2 passes and defended 5 while allowing 41 catches (74.9 PDPct). He started the one playoff game making 5 solo tackles and an assist while allowing 2 catches (67.5 PDPct). He has been excellent value for a late 4th round pick.

5.31 RB Junior Tippett 24/38 Post 31/37 Current 34/34
He never played a down for the 49ers as he wasn’t active for a single game in his rookie season. He was released in week 4 of the 2021 season and picked up by Kansas City in week 14. In 2022 he was signed by the Browns. He has rushed for 96 yards at a 3.69 avg and 1 TD while catching 4 passes for 21 yards and a TD.

6.31 RCB Caiden Harp 11/33 Post 12/21 Current xx/xx
Released prior to preseason 3 as he had a terrible camp and was not going to make the final 53

7.31 FB Darryl Harris 15/42 Post 18/36 Current 20/33
He was not active for any games in 2020 after being put on IR in week 1 due to a leg injury, he was released in the final cut down to 53 players prior to the 2021 regular season.

In the late rounds of the draft the 49ers added:

5.23 RB Darrin Gaylor (Colgate) - should add some speed to the RB's.
6.19 QB Diego Hitchcock (West Virginia) - weak arm QB who is a good West Coast QB as he is accurate and throws with good timing and has pocket sense. Will need time to develop as very raw.
6.22 OLB Bucky Hannam (Florida State) - Looks like he has pass rush ability with good speed and strength while being able to play the run.
7.23 FB Colin Wicks (Washington State) - Good blocker for the run and pass with strength and endurance.

Notes:

After missing most of the early period of FA due to being away the 49ers got busy late in FA.

The team renegotiated deals with:
WR Rivers
Guard Everett

Signed new deals with:
Safety Kinney (2 year deal).

Signing 3 year deals were:
CB Ward
TE Koyak
WR Funchess
OLB Hodges
DT Donovan

Signing 4 year deal
DE Buckner

New additions:
TE Kroft came over from Baltimore on a 3 year deal.
The team added two ILB's both signing 3 year deals - Kubrak (leaving Tampa Bay) while Mills left Dallas.

In LFA the 49ers signed the following:

TE's Jon Dick and Isaac Joseph (Both have a chance to make the roster, starter is set but these two plus Koyak and Kroft are in a battle for the other two roster spots).

G Dale Lewis (The roster only had 3 Guards on it so was looking to add one, I had Lewis on my draft list going into the 6th/7th rounds, but thought he could go undrafted)

QB Terry Kalista (After taking Hitchcock he was dropped from the list, he is another under developed QB who was worth adding to the roster to see how he pans out. Got low intelligence so avoid interception is not as bad as you might think).

They did miss out on DE Amari Holmes (Excellent PRT bar)

The 49ers had a press conference to announce the trade of QB Brandon Bridge from Detroit as they sent next years 1st round pick in exchange.

This deal has caused a lot of questions to be asked so who better to answer them than the team GM.

The big question is what does this mean for Kaepernick?
GM Thompson: Nothing, I know we gave up a 1st for Bridge, but until Kaep slows down he is the teams starter, he will start this season when healthy and next year as long as he is the best option for this team.

You drafted Diego Hitchcock and he has been highly touted as being the next starter a few years down the line?
GM Thompson: If Hitchcock continues to develop along the lines that we currently see he will be a starting QB for the 49ers. However he is going to need time to develop and if Kaepernick gets an injury who runs the team? If Diego doesn't develop like we hope then who is the QB? There are no absolutes in this game, injuries happen, players don't develop, loss form etc.. As the GM of this franchise I am trying to ensure that whatever happens we have the best chance of having a quality QB down the road.

You signed Derek Carr just before making the trade for Bridge, why? You know have 5 QB's on the roster.
GM Thompson: We signed Carr as Kaep was injured and we didn't know if we would be able to make a deal for Bridge. Yes we have too many QB's unfortunately we had to release one for Kevin Hagglund after starting last week has been released. We do wish him well and thank him for this contribution this season.

Why a 1st for Bridge?
GM Thompson: He is a quality QB that is only 27 years old. He is going to be a quality starter in this league as he can make the throws you want of a QB. We liked him when he was drafted in 2019 and think he was worth trading for. I would have preferred not to give up a 1st round pick but that was the cost. We hope it is a late 1st round pick and we think that if Kaep is injured again this season that Bridge can help make the pick worth less.

With no 1st round pick to worry about it is time for the 3 year draft review.

2021

The 3rd round pick was traded to Kansas City for RT Kinney
The team made a deal with the Colts sending franchised DE Schobel and 1.17 to the Colts in exchange for 1.10 and 2.14. The 49ers then sent 2.14, 4.17 and a 4th in 2022 to New England for 2.4

1.10 RB Clayton Redman 39/58 Post 45/61 Current 62/62
The deal to move up to get Redman has provided dividends from the start, he started all 16 games rushing for 1305 yards (4.17 avg) and 4 TD’s, while catching 26 passes (78.8%) for 309 yards (including a 74 yarder) and 2 TD’s he did have an issue with fumbles however as he lost the ball 10 times and recovered 1. He started both playoff games rushing for 120 yards (5.0 avg) and 1 TD, caught 2 passes (50%) for 15 yards, but lost another fumble.
In 2022 he led the league in rushing with 1753 yards (4.79 avg.) and 7 TD’s he also added 48 catches (774%) for 430 yards and 5 TD’s (3 drops). He fumbled 10 time again, recovering 2 while making 3 special teams tackles, and forcing a fumble. He started the 1 playoff game rushing for 88 yards (3.67 avg.) while catching 2 passes (66.7%) for 6 yards, fumbling once and making a ST tackle. The fumbles may have cost him a spot in the All League 1st team, but he did secure an All League 2nd Team spot.
He started 15 of 16 games in 2023 rushing for 1441 yards (4.23 avg.) and 9 TD’s. He added 40 catches (72.7%) for 402 yards and 3 TD’s (3 drops) but he ball security was much improved as he only fumbled 3 times, recovering 1. He started the one playoff game rushing for 82 yards (4.32 avg.) and 1 TD, catching 3 passes (100%) for 19 yards and 2 TD’s as well as making a ST tackle in a losing cause.

2.4 SLB Aaron Barrett 18/43 Post 20/41 Current 39/39
Barrett was active for 6 games in his rookie season making 9 solo tackles and 2 assists, he allowed 9 catches (PDPct 53.7) and recovered a fumble. He was active for 1 playoff game but was only on the field for 1 ST play. In 2022 he was active for 7 games making 18 solo tackles and 3 assists. He allowed 13 catches (PDPct 60.4). In the playoff game he made 1 solo tackles, recorded his first sack and hurry as well as a QB knockdown. This impressed the coaching staff so he started 14 of 16 games in 2023 as he made 80 solo tackles, 18 assists, 2 sacks, 3 hurries and 1 blocked pass. He allowed a massive 48 catches, but did defend one pass and pick off another which he returned 32 yards for a TD, (PDPct 69.1). He forced 2 fumbles and made 1 ST tackle. He started the playoff game making 6 solo tackles while allowing 3 catches (PDPct 68.8). He has shown some promise so can’t be written off as a bust just yet.

2.16 LG Dominic Diaz 25/48 Post 20/42 Current 24/29
He was active for 3 games in his rookies season getting on the field for 21 ST plays. He was not active for any games in 2022, however he was active for all 16 games in 2023 where he failed to record a KRB in 3 opportunities, but did allow a sack! He made 1 ST tackle, and was active for the one playoff game being on the field for 5 ST plays. A massive disappointment for a middle of the 2nd round selection.

5.16 SILB Toby Hickman 21/45 Post 26/33 Current 39/39
He started 2 of 15 games in his rookie season making 8 solo tackles and 6 assists, while adding 2 hurries and 1 blocked pass. He defended 1 pass, allowed 5 catches (PDPct 78.9) and forced a fumble. He was active for both playoff games, starting one as he made 7 solo tackles and 2 assists, but he did allow 3 catches (PDPct 72.5). He started 5 of 9 games in 2022 as he suffered a few injuries. He made 27 solo tackles, and 13 assists while allowing 16 catches (PDPct 71.4). He recovered 2 fumbles but missed the playoffs after being put on IR. In 2023 he started 6 of 16 games making 46 solo tackles and 13 assists, he recorded his first sacks and also blocked a pass. He defended 4 more passes, while allowing 21 catches (PDPct 75.2) and forced 2 fumbles. He was active for the playoff game as he made 5 solo tackles and 1 assist but allowed 2 catches (PDPct 60.0)

6.15 K Mercury Rice 44/57 Post 48/63 Current 63/63
Rice hit on 31 of 38 FG’s (81.6%) in his rookie season with a long of 54, he was 15/21 over 40 (71.4%) and 6 of 8 over 50 (75%) while making all 41 PAT’s. In 2022 he hit on 29 of 38 (76.3%) as he only made 9 of 17 over 40 (52.9%) and 3 of 7 over 50 (42.9%). He also struggled with PAT’s as he was 36 of 39 there. He bounced back in 2023 as he hit on 31 of 37 (83.8%) and a long of 56. He converted 11 of 15 over 40 (73.3%) and 5 of 7 over 50 (71.4%) while making 33 of 34 PAT’s.

7.17 C Lenny Spearman 21/45 Post 22/31 Current 24/30
Spearman was cut after the preseason games ended as part of the final cut down to 53 players.

2022 Draft review. (A very late review)

In 2021 the 49ers sent 2.14, 4.17 and a 4th in 2022 to New England for 2.4

1.26 SS Korey Bradford 30/57 Post 37/56 Current 56/56
He started 12 of the 13 games he was active in his rookie season allowing 39 catches, defending 8 and picking off 2 (34 return yards) to record a PDPct 77.6. He made 50 solo tackles and 10 assists, recovered a fumble and made 8 tackles on special teams.
He added 3 more ST tackles in the 1 playoff game, he started the game but allowed 6 catches (PDPct 55.5) while making 7 solo tackles and 1 assist. He started 14 of the 15 games active in 2023 defending 7 passes and picking off 1 (3 return yards) but allowed 35 catches (PDPct 77.5) while making 57 solo tackles, 24 assists and forced a fumble. He appeared in the one playoff game defending 1 pass (PDPct 95.8) and making 1 tackle. His 3rd season he started the 15 games he was active allowing 42 catches, defending 12 passes and picking off 1 (3 return yards) to record a PDPct 78.6. He made 91 solo tackles and 32 assists while recovering another fumble. Bradford has had injury issues as was proven in 2025 where he started all 11 games he was active for, so has not played all 16 games in his career so far.

2.27 RCB Michael Small 19/56 Post 23/42 Current Retired
He was active for 15 games in his rookie season allowing 10 catches and defending 1 (PDPct 69.1), he made 15 solo tackles and forced a fumble. He was active for the one playoff game making 1 solo tackles and 1 assist. In 2023 he was active for 7 games as he allowed 1 catch (PDPct 70.7) making 2 solo tackles and 1 tackle on special teams. He was active for the playoff game for 8 plays but had no impact. He was released prior to the preseason game 3 in 2024. This was a poor selection and makes the pick of Bradford in the 1st round look like a stud.

3.26 FL Devin Cobb 17/38 Post 19/31 Current 22/30
He was active for 6 games in his rookie season making 14 catches (70%) for 113 yards though he did drop 3 passes. After the 2023 draft and TC he was cut prior to the first preseason game.

5.26 LT Arnie Dunlap 18/39 Post 21/39 Current Retired.
Dunlap was active for 1 game in his rookie season where he got onto the field for 5 special teams plays. He did not see any action in 2023 and was released prior to the preseason game 3 in 2024.

6.27 QB Elijah Hsu 14/43 Post 16/34 Current 16/34
Released as part of the final 53 cut-down process

7.26 FS Chester Fisk Name 9/43 Post 12/33 Current 12/33
