Draft Review - 2016 the 3 year look back..

During the 2015 draft the 49ers sent their 2016 3rd and 6th round picks to Atlanta for 3.32. Prior to this draft the 49ers sent TE McDonald to San Diego for 2.16 and 6.15.

1.9 RB Leonard Copeland 42/62 Post 42/55 Current 56/56
Replacing a legend like Gore was going to be a tough act to follow but Copeland has been up to the task. He started 15 of 16 games in his rookie season rushing for 1237 yards and 12 TD’s with a 4.43 average. He added 30 catches (71.4%) for 262 yards and another TD, with 161 of the yards after the catch. He did fumble 3 times but recovered 1. He was a star in 2017 and was voted All League 2nd team RB despite leading the league in rushing with 1793 yards and 13 TD’s, averaging 5.27 per carry. He made 31 catches (75.6%) for 286 yards (112 YAC) and 3 TD’s with 1 drop. The only issue was 5 fumbles. However he didn’t lose the ball in the playoffs where he added 364 yards (5.28 average) and 3 more TD’s. He also caught 6 more passes (85.7%) for 89 yards and 1 TD. In 2018 he rushed for 1382 yards and 8 TD’s (4.16 average) while being much more involved in the passing game catching 54 passes (81.8%) for 476 yards (190 YAC) and 3 TD’s, 1 drop. He fumbled 4 times as well. In the playoffs he added 5 more catches (100%0 for 46 yards and 1 TD, while rushing for 263 yards at 4.87 per carry. He has more than repaid the draft pick but with only one year left on his contract it will be interesting to see if he will play again for the franchise in 2020.

2.8 SE Rick Douglas 23/51 Post 25/44 Current 35/35
Dougles has been a disappointment, he started 1 of 10 games his rookie season making 5 catches (50%) for 78 yards with 1 drop, he did make 5 special teams tackles. He started 3 of 10 games in 2017 catching 17 passes (70.8%) for 230 yards and 3 TD’s with 1 drop. The yardage included 70 yards after the catch while on special teams he made 13 tackles and forced 2 fumbles. He added another two special teams tackles in the playoffs. In 2018 he was active for all 16 games with 1 start, he made 10 catches (52.6%) for 153 yards (43 YAC) with 1 drop. He added 20 special teams tackles and forced another 2 fumbles. He added 2 more special teams tackles in the playoffs and made 1 catch (100%) for 13 yards.

2.16 RDT Andrew Springer 37/51 Post 44/63 Current 51/51
He started 10 of 16 games in 2016 making 26 solo tackles, 16 assists, 3 sacks, 17 hurries, 2 QB knockdowns and 4 blocked passes. he did allow 4 catches but also recovered a fumble. In his 2nd season he started 7 of 16 games making 24 solo tackles, adding 17 assists while recording 6 sacks, 10 hurries, 11 QB knockdowns and 5 blocked passes. He recovered another fumble and defended one pass while allowing a single catch. In the playoffs he started 2 of 3 games forcing and recovering a fumble
while adding 7 solo tackles, 1 assist. He recorded another 1.5 sacks (all in the bowl game), added 2 hurries and had 5 QB knockdowns. 2018 saw him play well enough to be voted to the All League 2nd team as a DT. He started 14 of 16 games making 45 solo tackles, 14 assists and 9 sacks. He added 12 hurries, 2 knocked down passes and 13 QB knockdowns. He did allow 2 catches but forced 4 fumbles, recovering 2 one of which he returned for a TD. In the playoffs he recovered another fumble, allowed a catch while making 2 solo tackles and 3 assists as well as knocking down the opposing QB 3 times and adding 3 hurries. He has been a great player and felt he should be paid more after his first 3 seasons. He held out but the plan was to offer him a new deal before the season started and that has been achieved.

4.13 P Amos Berrian 56/66 Post 57/60 Current 63/63
Berrian has played 47 of 48 games, missing 1 due to injury in 2017. He had a gross average of 46.7 and a net of 37.4 in his rookie season with 23 inside the 20 and a long of 76. He had a good season in 2017 with a gross average of 48.4 and a net of 41.7 with 25 inside the 20, however he was injured in week 17 and missed the playoffs and the bowl win. He came back strong and was voted All League 1st team punter in 2018 as he had a gross of 47.1 and a new of 41.3 with a massive 44 inside the 20. He added 5 more inside the 20 out of 10 punts in the two playoff games while having a gross average of 49.2 and a net of 38.4.

5.12 LDE Bryan Rice 16/36 Post 16/27 Current 18/27
Released in the final round of cuts prior to the 2016 season.

6.15 RT Gerald Mastromonaco 12/44 Post 12/36 Current 12/36
Released prior to preseason game 5 as he was not going to make the final roster.

7.10 SILB Peyton Delhomme 15/33 Post 16/26 Current 26/26
It was always going to be tough when the team plays a 4-3 defense when the roster has Willis, Bowman and an OLB who has just left the team, so little was expected of this selection. Delhomme was active 9 games his rookie season making 2 tackles, allowing 1 catch, making another tackle on special teams and recovering a fumble. He was active for 11 games in 2017 making 1 tackle while, allowing 1 catch. He actually started 1 of the 6 games active in his 3rd season making 3 tackles and adding an assist.

Three quality players, RB, DT and Punter while the WR in the 2nd has been good on special teams..

Bowman did get cut by the 49ers, but this may have only been a ripple that starts the changes in San Francisco as after a 1-3 start to the season sources are telling us that QB Kaepernick who has thrown 1 TD and 7 picks so far this season may have lost the starting job to Ryan.

The coaching staff and GM Thompson are not saying anything other than the team are preparing for their next game, practice this week should give us an indication of what the team plans.

2017 - 3 year draft Review (forgot to post it)

No moves were made before or during the draft to change the picks the 49ers had

1.15 RDE Wyatt Schobel 37/67 Post 33/50 Current 56/56
Active for 14 games in his rookie season he recorded 4.5 sacks and 8 hurries while making 10 tackles and adding 4 assists while recovering a fumble. He was active in two playoff games including the bowl game, he recorded 0.5 sack, 1 tackle and 1 assist in the championship game and added a hurry in the bowl game. He started 3 of the 16 games active in 2018 adding 5.5 sacks, 16 hurries, 7 QB knockdowns and 4 blocked passes while making 22 solo tackle and 15 assists. He forced 3 fumbles and recovered 5. In the playoff he was active for 2 games recording 2 sacks, 3 hurries and blocking 2 passes as he added 2 tackles and 2 assists and defended a pass. He became the full time starter in 2019 starting all 16 games as he made 40 solo tackle and 10 assists while recording 9.5 sacks and 18 hurries. He added 6 QB knockdowns and 7 blocked passes forcing 1 fumble. In the playoffs he started all 3 games adding 3 hurries and 1 QB knockdown as well as 4 solo tackles and an assist. He holdout in 2020 could well impact his future in San Francisco but he was a successful pick.

2.16 LT Percy Richmond 12/53 Post 18/52 Current 52/52
Active for 4 games his rookie season he made 1 KRB (100%) as he was on the field for 10 plays. He was also active for 1 playoff game. He started 3 of 14 games in 2018 recording 2 KRB’s (7.7%) and allowed a sack. He started 2 playoff games making 4 KRB’s (50%) which helped establish him as a starter for 2019 as he started all 16 games making 21 KRB’s (29.6%) as he made one pancake and allowed 5 sacks. He started all 3 playoff games recording another 6 KRB’s (46.2%) but did allow 2 sacks. If he can continue to improve then he should prove to be a very good 2nd round selection.

3.15 SE Wayne Mungro 32/42 Post 34/42 Current 33/33
Was active for 4 games in 2017 catching all 6 passes thrown his way for 78 yards and 1 TD. He also rushed once for 6 yards. He started 4 of 12 games active in 2018 catching 14 passes (50%) for 149 yards but dropped 3 passes. He was active for two playoff games making 3 catches (60%) for 24 yards while dropping one and rushing once for 2 yards. In 2019 he started 5 of 16 games catching 34 passes (57.6%) for 358 yards and 3 TD’s (dropping 4 passes) while he rushed twice for 4 yards and fumble once and recovered one. In the playoffs he started 2 of the 3 games catching 3 passes (42.9%) for 24 yards dropping two passes. Solid but not great as a 3rd round selection.

4.16 RB Jerome Bridges 25/37 Post 26/39 Current 21/23
Active for 1 game in his rookie season he rushed twice for 6 yards. In 2018 he started 1 of the 14 games he was active rushing for 349 yards at a 3.92 avg finding the endzone twice and losing two fumbles. He added 5 catches (62.5%) for 31 yards and another TD with 1 drop. He was active for two playoff games rushing for 49 yards at 4.45 avg, however with Delgado being acquired he was not active for a single game in 2019. Was solid but a poor camp in 2020 makes him vulnerable to losing his roster spot.

5.15 RG Broderick Griffith 13/38 Post 18/33 Current 24/24
Started 4 of 16 games in his rookie season as he recording 8 KRB’s (40%) but allowing 3 sacks in those games. He was active for 3 playoff games but missed his only KRO chance. He started 1 of 14 games in 2018 but failed in his 4 opportunities to recorded a KRB and it was a similar story in 2019 as he was active for 13 games not recording a KRB in his one chance. He is a solid back-up who similar to Bridges has seen his stock fall in the 2020 TC and may struggle to make the final 53.

6.16 LCB Dixon Turner 22/39 Post 26/44 Current 49/49
Turner started 2 of 16 games in 2017 picking off 1 passes and defending 3 more while allowing 9 catches to record a 82.6 PDPct. He made 14 solo tackles and 1 assist while adding another tackle on special teams. He added 4 solo tackles and 2 assists in the playoffs where he started 1 of the 3 games allowing two catches but forcing a fumble. In 2018 he started 3 of 16 games defending 5 passes while allowing 19 catches (78 PDPct), he made 20 solo tackles and added 9 assists and forced a fumble as well. He allowed 3 catches in two playoff games while making 5 solo tackles and 2 assists. He was the started in 2019 starting the 13 games he was active, he picked off 1 pass and defended 11 but allowed 38 catches as he recorded a 77.9 PDPct. He made 44 solo tackles and 9 assists while forcing another fumble. He started all 3 postseason games where he defended 4 passes while allowing 7 catches (82.7 PDPct) making 11 tackles and adding 2 assists. He has been an excellent pick up for such a late draft pick.

7.15 SLB Glenn Marshall 16/36 Post 15/22 Current 15/22
Marshall did not make much of an impression in TC or preseason so was released in the final cut-down to 53.

2018 3 year draft review

Prior to the draft 3.32 was sent to Jacksonville for SS Cyprien.

1.32 FL Bernard Garner 25/43 Post 27/32 Current 37/37
Starting 6 of 16 games in his rookie season he made 31 catches (50%) for 356 yards and 2 TD’s with 3 drops. He added 4 yards rushing on 1 carry, returned 2 punts at a 7.5 avg. and returned 5 kick-offs averaging 19 yards per return He was active for 2 playoff games making 3 catches (50%) for 28 yards with 1 drop. and returned 1 kick-off for 21 yards. In 2019 he started 2 of 16 games making 24 catches (48%0 for 359 yards and 2 TD’s (4 drops). He returned 4 punts for a 5.8 avg and 4 kick-offs for a 39.5 avg. including 1 TD. He fumbled 3 times but recovered 2. In the playoffs he started 2 of 3 games making 5 catches (50%) for 104 yards, 1 TD and 2 more drops while returning 1 punt for 4 yards and 2 kickoffs for a 16.5 avg. 2020 saw 3 more starts in the 16 games he was active as he made 26 catches (46.4%) for 453 yards and 3 TD’s (2 drops). He returned 1 punt for 11 yards and 5 kick-offs for a 19.2 avg, while also recovering a fumble and making a tackle on special teams.

2.32 RT Earnest Prior 11/33 Post 16/30 Current 22/30
Prior was only active for two games in 2018 making no impact and was then cut in 2019 as part of the process to get to 53.

4.32 RB Eduardo Page 17/25 Post 18/27 Current 20/26
Page was active for 5 games his rookie season rushing 5 times for 21 yards (4.2 average) and catching the one pass thrown to him for 25 yards (all of those after the catch). However after the team acquired Delgado via trade he became surplus to needs so was cut as part of the 2019 cut down to 53.

5.32 TE Irving Sherman 27/47 Post 36/58 Current 56/56
Due to injury to Amaro he started 12 of 16 games in his rookie season making 27 catches (67.5%) for 278 yards and 3 TD’s (3 drops). He added 4 KRB’s (44.4%) and also recovered a fumble. He started 1 of 2 playoff games making another 4 catches (66.7%) for 87 yards with 1 drop, he also added a KRB (50%). He started 6 of 16 games in 2019 making 23 catches (52.3%) for 177 yards with 2 TD’s but also 5 drops. He rushed for 6 yards on his 1 carry while adding a KRB (25%). He played in all 3 playoff games making 3 catches (42.9%) for 60 yards but also dropped 2. 2020 saw him start 7 of 16 games making a career best 41 catches (67.2%) for 405 yards (4 drops) while adding 8 KRB’s (42.1%) including 2 pancakes. He recovered a fumble and forced 2 more as he made 20 special teams tackles.

6.32 SLB Silas Henry 23/29 Post 26/30 Current 34/34
He was active for two games in his rookie season getting onto the field for 14 plays making 2 tackles and adding an assist while allowing 1 catch. In 2019 he was active all 16 games and on the field for 182 plays as he made 21 solo tackles and 6 assists but he allowed 14 catches (PDPct 64.0) though he did recover 2 fumbles. He was also active for all 3 playoff games making 5 solo tackles and allowing 1 catch in 32 plays. He was only active for 5 games in his 3rd season and on the field for 11 plays, making 1 tackle and 1 assist while allowing 1 catch.

7.32 QB Sawyer Peters 8/51 Post 11/30 Current 12/36
Active as the kick holder in all 16 games his rookie season he was released in the final 53 cut down in 2019

Other than the 5th round selection of Sherman this was a poor draft for the 49ers.

TRADE NEWS

The 49ers and Colts announced a deal that sent Franchised DE Wyatt Schobel to Indianapolis along with pick 1.17 in exchange for picks 1.10 and 2.14

GM Thompson said that he wanted to thank Schobel for his time in San Francisco and that obviously the team hadn't wanted to trade the DE who has 30 sacks and 60 hurries in 62 games, but after initial talks with his agent Tucker Berger it was clear he would not sign a long term deal. The 49ers could have kept him on the franchise tag this year and even next but it was felt by both parties that a parting of the ways would benefit both sides. The move up in the 1st round allows the team to target a couple of players and the addition of another 2nd round pick gives the team some flexibility to either add a couple of players or package picks 46 and 48 in order to move up if that was a situation that was desirable.

The 49ers draft Boston University RB Clayton Redman with the 10th overall pick.

GM Thompson said "We think he is the best RB in the class and with Delgado in the last year of his contract it gives us some flexibility. We were planning to take a DE but couldn't pass on Redman's talent".

The team has made a trade in the 2nd round moving up to 2.4 while sending 2.14, 4.17 and a 4th next year to New England in order to select SLB Aaron Barrett. Thompson said "He was the last of the LB's we were looking at, we had made offers to be in position to get a couple of ones in the 1st round but couldn't get a deal done. We didn't want to miss out on him so made a deal to ensure we got him."

The team still has pick 2.16 and then don't have a pick until the 5th round.

2019 3 year draft review

The 49ers made a couple of trades during the draft as they sent pick 5.30 to the Jets for DE Buckner, later in the 1st round San Francisco made a deal with Detroit sending pick 1.30 to the Lions for RB Delgado and pick 2.7.

2.7 SE Breshad Perriman 25/48 Post 30/42 Current 39/39
He started 1 of 16 games in his rookie season catching 7 passes (58.3%) for 158 yards and 2 TD’s with a long of 45. He recovered 1 fumble and made 8 special teams tackles (249 plays). He was active for all 3 playoff games making 2 catches from 2 thrown to him for 36 yards (in the bowl game he caught one pass for 15 yards). He started 9 of 16 games in 2020 catching 37 passes (52.9%) for 431 yards and 4 TD’s but did drop 6 passes and fumbled twice. He saw less time on special teams as he was on the field for 29 plays not making a single tackle. In his 3rd season he started 9 of 16 games again, making 37 catches (63.8%) again, this time for 510 yards but only 1 TD, he also rushed 3 times for 1 yard. He fumbled twice but did recover 1. He played in both playoff games making 6 catches (60%) for 94 yards and a TD. He has been solid but certainly seems like he was not worth such a high 2nd round pick.

2.30 RG Antoine Everett 17/50 Post 21/53 Current 34/52
He was active for 13 games but was only on the field for 3 running plays and 85 special teams plays during his rookie season. He saw a little more action in his 2nd season as he failed to make a KRB in 5 opportunities as he was active for 12 games but on the field for 46 pass plays and 38 running ones. He did recover a fumble with he returned for a TD. In 2021 he started 1 of the 8 games he was active making 1 KRB (16.7%) as he was on the field for 47 pass plays and 38 running ones. He was also active for 1 playoff game and was on the field for 3 passing plays. This has been a poor return for a 2nd round pick.

3.30 SLB Zach Hodges 10/55 Post 14/46 Current 29/43
He was active for 16 games in is rookie season making 10 tackles and adding 5 assists while allowing 7 catches (67.9 PDPct), in the 3 playoff games he made 3 tackles and an assist while allowing 3 more catches (54% PDPct) Note that 2 of the tackles were in the bowl game. In 2020 he started 5 of 16 games making 26 solo tackles and 12 assists, he defended a pass while allowing 15 catches (70.8 PDPct). 2021 saw him start 6 of 14 games making 27 solo tackles and 10 assists as well as recording his 1st sack. He defended 2 passes and allowed 12 catches for a 75.5 PDPct. In the playoffs he started 1 of the 2 games allowing 1 catch, making 6 tackles and 2 assists. He has been a solid late 3rd round player.

4.7 K Kyle Brindza 31/58 Post 31/50 Current 48/48
He kicked 24 of 28 FG’s in his rookie season including a long of 55, one of the misses was from 50+ where he was 2 of 3, and another 2 were from 40+ where he was 10 of 13. He converted all 49 XP’s. He made 2 of 3 in the playoff games including 1 of 52 yards and hit on all 8 PAT’s.. In 2020 he made 34 of 44 FG’s, 4 of the misses were from 50+ (making 3 of 7) and he missed 3 40+ FG’s as he was 8 of 15 in the 40+ category. He made all 32 PAT’s as well. Despite being an 80% FG kicker he lost his job in 2021 preseason as the team drafted Mercury Rice for his kick-off ability.

4.30 SS Anthony Jefferson 22/44 Post 24/32 Current 38/38
He was active for 10 games in 2019 defending 2 passes while allowing 2 catches (86.1 PDPct). He made 4 solo tackles and 1 assist. He also made 1 tackle on special teams (100 plays) and was active for all 3 playoff games (8 defensive plays and 25 special teams plays) without recording a statistic. He was active for all 16 games in his 2nd season allowing 1 catch (76 PDPct) and making 3 tackles during the 47 plays he was on the field. He did make 4 special teams tackles (145 plays). 2021 saw him start 1 of 16 games as he made 20 tackles and added 7 assists. He defended 1 pass but allowed 9 catches (77.7 PDPct) while he made 2 tackles on special teams (90 plays). He played 1 playoff game making 1 tackle during the 9 plays he was on the field.

6.30 LCB Garry Peters 13/36 Post 13/35 Current 25/25
He was active for 3 games in his rookie season allowing 1 catch (72.5 PDPct) and he made 1 tackle. He was active for all 16 games in 2020 as he allowed 7 catches while picking off 1 pass which he returned for 29 yards (76.7 PDPct). He made 10 solo tackles and had an assist. He also made 20 special teams tackles (174 plays) forcing 2 fumbles and recovering 2. He was active for 15 games in 2021 defending 1 pass while allowing 5 catches (79 PDPct) as he made 7 solo tackles and 2 assists. On special teams he made 13 solo tackles (320 plays). He was also active for 2 playoff games making 1 tackle and 1 assist in 42 plays. For a late round pick he has had some impact so was probably worth taking.

7.30 LG Jarvis Harrison 21/47 Post 18/33 Current 18/33
The 49ers added a few Guards in FA as well and Harrison was not good enough to make the final 53 cut down.
