2014 3 year draft review.

Picks in round 2 and 4 were sent to the Titans prior to the 2013 season for DT Pitoitua. CB Brown was franchised and then traded to Oakland for 5.12, 6.5 and a 3rd in 2015, then before the draft WLB Aldon Smith was traded to Houston for 1.16 and CB Brandon Harris. With New Orleans on the clock at 1.13, a deal was made to send 1.16 and 3.19 to the Saints to move up. During the 2nd round the 49ers traded star TE Davis to the Jets for TE Miller and pick 2.22, then during the 3rd round they sent their 3rd round pick from 2015 to Atlanta for 3.24.

Note: I forgot to note the rating post Preseason 2, so have taken the league scouts rating for both drafted and post preseason 2.

1.13 SE Mike Evans 34/53 Post 39/40 Current 52/52
Evans became the starter from day one opposite Crabtree, he actually started 11 of 16 games catching 48 passes (55.8%) for 559 yards and 3 TD’s. He did drop 3 passes and ran twice for 4 yards. He was more effective in the playoffs catching 9 passes (81.8%) for 180 yards, but didn’t make a single play in the bowl game. He started 14 of 16 games in 2015 catching 52 passes (44.4%) for 778 yards and 1 TD with 6 drops. He also rushed once for zero yards. In 2016 he started all 16 games and made 50 catches (54.9%) for 796 yards and 2 TD’s but also dropped a huge 12 possible catches. He has been a decent pick but whether he justified the move up to grab him is debatable.

1.18 TE Jace Amaroe 44/69 Post 51/72 Current 82/82
Amaro started 14 of 16 games as they 49erd felt once he was drafted they could trade away Davis. He started 14 of 16 games making 48 catches (80%) for 561 yards with 3 drops and one fumble. He made 11 catches in the playoffs (64.7%) for 138 yards (4 for 35 in the bowl game). Add the fact he recorded 5 KRB’s (27.8%) in the regular season as well as another in the playoffs (33.3%) you can see he contributed to the bowl win. In 2015 he started 9 of 14 games due to a knee injury. He still managed to catch 40 passes (61.5%) for 437 yards and 3 TD’s (3 drops) while adding 8 KRB’s (57.1%) including 2 pancakes. His best season was in 2016 where he was All League 2nd Team TE. He started 14 of 16 games catching 52 passes (63.4%) for 686 yards and 4 TD’s while only dropping 2. He recovered one fumble and added 10 KRB’s (37%) including 3 pancakes. The 49ers know he is in the last year of his rookie contract and are working out how to resign him!

2.22 RCB E J Gaines 16/41 Post 15/31 Current 36/36
Started 1 of the 16 games he was active, picking off 1 pass and defending 3 while allowing 13 catches to record a PDPct of 80%. He made 20 tackles and added 2 assists while forcing 1 fumble and recovering 1 as well. In 2015 he started 6 of 16 games defended 4 passes while allowing 12 catches (PDPct 79.4) he added 24 solo tackles and 6 assists and made one special teams tackle. In 2016 he started 4 of 14 games defending 2 passes but allowing 22 catches (74.0 PDPct), he made 32 solo tackles and was in on 17 assists and made another ST tackle. Gaines has been a disappointment after the 49ers made the move to select him.

3.24 LDT Anthony Johnson Name 21/47 Post 24/38 Current 42/42
He started 2 of 16 games making 15 tackles and 7 assists, while as a pass rusher he recorded 0.5 sacks and forced 6 hurries while blocking 2 passes. In his 2nd season he started 5 of 16 games making 8 solo tackle and 7 assists. He added 4 hurries and knocked down the QB once. Despite a stronger DT roster in 2016 he started 8 of 16 games making 33 solo tackles and adding 10 assists. He big improvement was as a pass rusher as he recorded 5 sacks, 8 hurries, 3 QB knockdowns and blocked 2 passes, while also recovering two fumbles and forcing another. He is a good player who is not getting the playing time due to the strength in depth at that position on the roster.

5.12 RT Joel Bitonio 17/47 Post 22/44 Current 33/37
In his rookie season he was active 2 games in the regular season but was only on the field for 6 plays, he was active for all 3 playoff games but was only on the field for 1 play. He started 1 of 16 games in 2015 recording 1 KRB (12.5%) and allowing a sack as he was on the field for 101 plays, while in 2016 he was active for all 16 games but was only on the field for 52 plays, where he failed to record a KRB (4 opportunities) but he did make one tackle on ST. He is unlikely to be extended when his contract ends

5.20 RB Jerick McKinnon 29/32 Post 36/53 Current 36/36
McKinnon was active for 6 games, rushing once for a loss of 2 yards.
He did play in the bowl game where he returned one kick-off for 22 yards. He was active for 12 games in 2016 and rushed the ball 40 times of r160 yards (4.0 avg) while finding the endzone once. He added 3 cacthes (110%) for 34 yards including a 22 yarder but did fumble twice with one recovery. With Copeland added to the roster and Gore gone he was active for 8 games in 2016 as he rushed 56 times for 178 yards (3.18 avg) finding the end zone twice. He added another 3 catches (100%) for 35 yards and one of those he scored a TD on.

6.5 QB Casey Pachall 3/21 Post 8/44 Current 15/41
He was active for all 19 games but did not see the field other than when asked to hold for kicks. This was the same for all 16 games in 2015 and 2016.

6.19 LS Rex Harrison 20/20 Post 18/18 Current 18/18
Again was the long snapper for all 19 games in his rookie season. He was the same for all 16 games in 2015 and 2016, though he did record two ST tackles in 2016.

7.18 FL T.J Jones 26/46 Post 29/49 Current 44/44
Played in all 16 games in the regular season starting 6 of them as he caught 20 passes (57.1%) for 255 yards and 2 TD’s. He dropping 4 balls and fumbled twice, though recovered one. He also rushed twice for 3 yards, returned 35 punts at a 81. average and 18 kick-offs at 23.4 average return.
In the playoffs he played two games missing the bowl due to injury, he caught 5 passes (83.3%) for 62 yards and returned 4 kick-offs at a 21.3 yard per return average, though he did fumble once. In 2015 he started 3 of 16 games making 20 catches (50%) for 298 yards and 3 TD’s (5 drops). He returned 2 punts for 6 yards and 29 Kick-offs at a 21.3 average whilst fumbling twice. In his 3rd season he started 5 of 16 games and made 36 catches (66.7%) for 585 yards and 4 TD’s (2 drops), he did fumble once. He returned 2 punts for 2 yards and 6 kick-offs at a 23.8 average.

2015 3 year Draft Review

An additional 3rd was picked up as part of the 2014 trade of CB Brown to the Raiders. The 49ers sent their own 3rd to Atlanta for a 3rd round pick in 2014. Prior to the draft the 49ers sent 2.32 to Miami for NT Tuitt. During the draft the 49ers wanted to move up in the 1st round so sent 1.32 and 3.13 to New England for 1.25. 3.32 was obtained back from Atlanta for a 3rd and 6th in 2016.

1.25 C Levi Orosco 46/73 Post 58/94 Current 91/91
Orosco may have been one of the best picks in this draft as he has led the 49ers OL from the middle. He has played and started all 48 regular season games since being selected and started all 3 post season games in his 3rd year. In his rookie season he recorded 35 KRB’s (43.2%) including one pancake while not allowing a single sack. In his 2nd season he saw a dip in performance as he recorded 28 KRB’s (28.9%) with 5 pancakes, but also allowed 2 sacks. In 2017 he has a season to remember as one of the best in history as he recorded 63 KRB’s (47.7%) including 23 pancakes and zero sacks allowed. This level of performance ensured he was All League 1st team Center, in the playoffs he added another 16 KRB’s (47.1%) and 3 more pancakes with no sacks (5 of the KRB’s were in the bowl win). He has one year left on his contract and the 49ers will be doing everything they can to ensure he signs another long term deal.

3.32 K Ben Dole 49/60 Post 53/64 Current 58/58
Dole became the teams kicker as a rookie and converted 27 of 33 attempts including a 55 yard long, of his misses 1 was 50+ where he made 1 out of 2, while he missed another 2 from 40+ as he finished 7 of 10 between 40 and 50 yard attempts. He didn’t see any slump in his 2nd season as he made 32 of 36 attempts, being a perfect 5 out of 5 from 50+ including a 56 yard FG, and being 8 out of 10 between 40 and 50 yards. 2017 saw him miss his first PAT and he was 36 out of 43 in FG’s, making 4 of 7 50+ attempts and going 9 of 12 between 40 and 50 yard attempts. In the playoffs he was 4 of 4, including a career best 58 yard FG in the bowl game and hitting 48 yarder in the game as well. His first 3 years have seen him convert 84.8% of his attempts and making 10 of 14 from 50+ so proving his worth as a 3rd round selection.

4.32 TE Erik Assler 18/29 Post 19/25 Current 26/26
With Amaro already on the roster Assler was never intended to be a starter, he was active for 10 games in his rookie season catching 3 of 4 passes thrown to him for 18 yards, he dropped the 4th one. He recorded 1 KRB (50%) which was a pancake and made 5 tackles on special teams. In 2017 he was active for all 16 games and started 2, he made 13 catches (43.3%) for 118 yards with 4 drops. He was decent blocking 4 KRB’s (40%) of which 3 were pancakes. He made 2 special teams tackles and forced 1 fumble. In 2018 he started 3 of the 14 games he was active, catching 4 passes (50%) for 79 yards (no drops) but was also asked to run with the ball as he had 10 carries for 21 yards and 1 TD, he also recovered a fumble and made 3 KRB’s (42.9%). In the playoffs he rushed 3 times for 20 yards and made 1 special teams tackle.

5.32 LDE Elias DeLorraine 20/32 Post 22/26 Current 23/25
Released after preseason in the final cut down

6.32 RCB Hayden Toyama 18/40 Post 20/31 Current 27/28
He was active for 9 games his rookie season allowing 2 catches, making 1 tackle and adding 1 assist as he was on the field for only 30 plays, though he did have an impact as he forced 1 fumble and recovered one. In 2016 he started 1 of the 12 games he was active, defending 3 passes and allowing 6 catches (81.8%). He made 10 solo tackles and was in on one assist. Unfortunately he did not progress so saw less action in his 3rd season and was only active for 2 regular season games where he allowed 1 catch and made 1 tackle during the 7 plays he was on the field. He did play in the divisional round of the playoffs and was on the field for 30 plays making 1 tackle.

The 49ers parade was a quick and exciting party in San Francisco as they celebrate winning the bowl for the 2nd time in the leagues history.

However GM Thompson was quick to point out that decisions need to be made re next season already.
In a quick interview he hinted that both DC Vic Fangio and Strength coach Mark Uyeyama would both be offered new deals too ensure they did not go into the season with only one year left on their current deals.

However the interesting notes we made from the conversation were around the players now out of contact, including TE Amaro, WR's Crabtree and Evans, LT Staley to mention a few. It seems that TE Jace Amaro will be franchised as the team look for more time to get a longer term deal but together, but there are questions about how aggressive they will be with the others as they have QB Kaepernick, C Orosco and ILB Willis all in their final years of their deals so the team will need to spend some money on getting some of those players to sign longer term deals as well.

After a Bowl MVP and All time season best QB rating in 2017 he is coming into the 2018 season with 1 year left on his contract

It is going to be a busy offseason for the 49ers.

Snippets of news from the bay

Defensive Co-ordinator Vic Fangio has signed a new deal to stay in San Francisco, the deal is a 4 year one worth just over $4M per year.
While sources are also saying strength coordinator Mark Uyeyama has also agreed a new 4 year deal worth $1.89M per annum as the team looked to retain the coaching staff from last season.

Twitter suggests that TE Jace Amaro has been designated as the Franchise Player as on his account he posted #Franchised - staying in the bay

Rumour City News:

Its official TE Jace Amaro was given the tag as was tweeted earlier
However there is talk that he will sign a 4 year deal shortly worth over $36M that is big money for a TE who only caught 44 passes (3 TD's) last season.

However the biggest rumour is that QB Colin Kaepernick is set to sign a 3 year deal worth $58.3M.
He is going into the last season of his current contract, has now got two bowl rings, was named MVP in the last one and led the league in QB rating.

What does this mean for the players out of contract is that the 49ers will have less cap space than expected to resign them.. interesting times in San Francisco

Shock News

Image

LT Joe Staley has left San Francisco as he signs a two year deal worth $15.31M that included a $4.82M signing on bonus to go to the Bills.
The 49ers had made an offer worth $12M over two years but it wasn't good enough, source say GM Thompson is disappointed in Staley as he was willing to offer a deal close to the one he signed, but had issues with making offers (No internet for a day and forgot to make changes when it came back!).

Free Agency News and a Trade

Matt Barrows of The Sacramento Bee broke the news that the 49ers made a trade last night as they sent their 3rd round pick (3.32) to Jacksonville for SS John Cyprien. He is a solid safety who is expected to start with Reid in the secondary.

GM Thompson was quoted as saying "We felt that Cyprien was better than anyone else we could get at the end of the 3rd round in a position that we were looking to strengthen".

There are rumours that the team are already in talks with his agent Landon Zeigler to reduce the cap hit to the team.

News then leaked out via The Mercury News website that the team has resigned CB Harris Brandon as he inked a 3 year deal worth $11.15M and is expected to start opposite Culliver.

However the Baltimore Sun then broke the news that the Ravens had signed WR Michael Crabtree (3 years $16.42M, including over $8M in bonus money). The 49ers were looking to resign the WR despite only starting 8 of 9 games in the regular season and making 34 catches for 489 yards and 3 TD's.
Though some analysts wondered what he was worth as he was poor in the playoffs (He caught 3 passes for 25 yards) despite starting all 3 games.

49ers.com announced that WR Mike Evans has agreed a 3 year deal worth $35M to return to San Francisco.
The deal included a $13M bonus and his salary cap number this season is $10.33M.

Coach Harbaugh said "Mike is a quality WR that we really wanted to get back onto the roster. Our GM was concerned how much it was going to cost but made an offer right at the top end of our scale to get the job done. Yes this might impact what we can do throughout the rest of free agency but we have the draft to come and some cap space left to fill out the roster".

GM Thompson was not available for comment as the 2018 Draft is underway but is expected to be available to the press sometime in the next few days.

Mike Evans has tweeted 'Back in the Bay #Gold'

In the 1st round of the 2018 Draft the 49ers added a WR who they hope will be able to play opposite Mike Evans for years to come as they selected Louisana-Monroe's Bernard Garner.
